Factory workers in Noida staged protests demanding higher wages and better working conditions as living costs surge globally. Police fired tear gas after demonstrations turned violent, with vehicles burned and stones thrown. The authorities justified their action as involving “only minimal use of force.” The workers are demanding that fixed hours be set and that workers be paid overtime. This unrest is also caused by high oil prices due to the US and Israel’s war against Iran. In Haryana, similar protests resulted in an increase in the minimum wage by 35%.
