New Delhi is all set to launch the largest census with three million government officials to participate in the process of population count. The census process will be launched on Wednesday.

For the Indian government, this gigantic exercise of census is linked to matters of national importance which aids in goof governance, and data-oriented policy making. The exercise will also guide the state on ways to move forward on sensitive political issues, such as those related to castes, minorities, scheduled castes, and strategic planning on issues such as quotas, identification of disparities, and providing preliminary data on targeted interventions needed.

The census exercise will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase kicking off on Wednesday and will be completed in September. This phase is concerned with the door-to-door visits by officials to record details of housing in the country. This phase also involves the option of self-enumeration by citizens using an app and satellite imagery.

The second phase will consist of a population count, gathering data related to economic, demographic and social questions.

India had last carried out a census in 2011, as Covid-19 delayed the exercise in 2021.
