India and Slovakia have officially upgraded their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Slovakia, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since the country’s independence in 1993.

The visit represents a major milestone in India–Slovakia relations, strengthening cooperation across defence, counterterrorism, trade, education, and global governance.

India–Slovakia Counterterrorism Cooperation Strengthened

A key outcome of the bilateral talks was the decision to establish a Joint Working Group on Counterterrorism Cooperation between India and Slovakia.

Both countries also agreed to launch a consular dialogue mechanism, aimed at improving diplomatic coordination and citizen support services.

Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the initiative reflects growing cooperation on global security challenges and shared concerns over terrorism.

Bilateral Talks Cover Trade, Security, and Global Issues

During delegation-level talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak leadership reviewed the entire scope of India–Slovakia bilateral cooperation, including:

Trade and investment
Defence and security cooperation
Education and research
Labour mobility
Cultural exchange

The leaders also exchanged views on major global developments, including the Russia–Ukraine war, the situation in West Asia, and strengthening India–European Union relations.

Slovakia Supports India’s UN Security Council Bid

Slovakia reaffirmed its support for United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms, including India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat.

Indian officials reiterated that global institutions such as the UN must be reformed to reflect current geopolitical realities and the changing global order.

India has consistently called for a more representative and effective UN Security Council reform framework.

Multiple MoUs Signed Between India and Slovakia

India and Slovakia signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to expand cooperation in key sectors, including:

Labour migration and workforce mobility
Higher education and research collaboration
Audio-visual and cultural cooperation

These agreements aim to strengthen people-to-people ties, enhance academic exchange, and expand professional opportunities between the two countries.

PM Modi Honoured With Slovakia’s Highest Award

In a significant diplomatic gesture, Slovak President Peter Pellegrini conferred Slovakia’s highest state honour, the Order of the White Double Cross (First Class), on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The award recognises his contribution to strengthening India–Slovakia diplomatic relations and enhancing bilateral cooperation.

Historic Visit Strengthens India–Slovakia Relations

Officials described the visit as a turning point in India–Slovakia ties, expected to inject new momentum into bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.

The elevation of relations to a Comprehensive Partnership is expected to further deepen engagement between India and Slovakia at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
