Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar along with the President of ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Nitin Nabin resigned from Bihar’s Legislative Assembly and Legislative council respectively.
CM Kumar resigned from the post after he secured a position in the Rajya Sabha, indicating the ex-CM’s desire to join national politics. Nitish Kumar’s decision to move towards national politics and his election to Rajya Sabha marks a consequential event in Bihar’s politics.
Being the longest serving Chief Minister of the state of Bihar, Nitish Kumar will leave a space in Bihar’s politics which BJP aspires to fulfill with a new face. It can be the first time when BJP is in a position to appoint its own CM of the state.
On March 5th, Nitish Kumar announced that he will resign from the office of the CM as well as from the assembly after the Rajya Sabha election. This was later confirmed by Mokama MLA Anant Singh, who stated that the Chief Minister will resign on Sunday.
One of the most important aspects of the politics of Bihar was the rivalry between Nitish Kumar and Lalu Prasad Yadav of RJD, which comes to an end with this resignation. Bihar witnessed this rivalry for three straight decades, which stems from their 1990s split.
Though Lalu Prasad Yadav now is barred from elections, his party (RJD) with its opposition leader in legislative assembly is a tough contender of power against BJP.
The development comes after 4 months of Nitish Kumar leading the NDA alliance for a sweeping victory in state elections, and was sworn in for 10th time.
