Indian authorities are reportedly considering an unusual and highly controversial strategy to strengthen security along parts of the India–Bangladesh border: deploying crocodiles and venomous snakes in riverine areas where traditional fencing is difficult or impossible.
The idea, which has surfaced in internal discussions linked to India’s border management, is aimed at curbing illegal crossings, smuggling, and unauthorized movement across porous stretches of the frontier.
The India–Bangladesh border spans over 4,000 kilometers, with significant portions cutting through rivers, wetlands, and densely vegetated terrain. These areas have long posed challenges for physical barriers such as fences and surveillance infrastructure.
To address this, officials associated with India’s Border Security Force have reportedly explored the possibility of using natural deterrents, specifically dangerous wildlife to discourage the crossings in these hard-to-monitor zones.
Supporters of the idea argue that such a method could serve as a cost-effective and self-sustaining deterrent, reducing the need for constant human patrols or expensive infrastructure projects. They claim that similar concepts of “natural barriers” have been discussed historically, although rarely implemented in modern border security due to ethical and safety concerns.
However, the proposal has triggered widespread criticism from human rights organizations, environmentalists, and policy experts. Critics warn that introducing or encouraging populations of predators like crocodiles and venomous snakes could pose serious risks not only to migrants but also to local communities living near these border regions.
Many residents depend on these waterways for fishing, farming, and daily activities, and increasing the presence of dangerous wildlife could lead to unintended casualties.
Environmental experts have also raised alarms about the ecological consequences. Artificially altering wildlife populations or habitats could disrupt fragile ecosystems, potentially causing long-term damage to biodiversity.
Additionally, critics argue that such measures blur the line between border enforcement and inhumane deterrence, as they do not distinguish between smugglers, undocumented migrants, and innocent civilians.
At this stage, there has been no official confirmation that the plan has been approved or will be implemented. Nonetheless, the mere consideration of such a strategy has sparked intense debate both domestically and internationally.
Observers say the situation highlights the growing pressures on governments to secure borders while balancing humanitarian responsibilities and environmental protection.
