Bangladesh has accused India of attempting to force people across the shared border into Bangladeshi territory, saying its border forces successfully prevented several such incidents over the past day. The allegations have increased tensions between the neighboring countries ahead of a scheduled border security meeting.
According to Bangladesh’s Border Guard (BGB), at least 10 separate incidents were reported along different sections of the border. Bangladeshi officials claimed that Indian border personnel tried to move groups of people into Bangladesh without following official procedures. The BGB said its forces intervened and stopped the individuals from entering the country.
One of the largest reported incidents took place in the Jhenaidah district in western Bangladesh. Officials said dozens of people were allegedly being pushed toward the border when Bangladeshi border guards stepped in. Authorities stated that similar attempts were detected in several other border areas.
The issue of undocumented migration has remained a sensitive topic between the two countries for many years. Bangladesh shares one of the world’s longest land borders with India, stretching nearly 4,100 kilometers. Both nations regularly cooperate on border management, security, and migration issues. However, disagreements occasionally arise over the handling of individuals whose nationality is disputed.
Bangladesh maintains that any person believed to be a Bangladeshi citizen should be returned through established diplomatic and legal channels. Officials argue that unilateral actions at the border could create security concerns and increase tensions between the two countries.
The latest accusations come as India continues efforts to identify and remove undocumented migrants. Immigration enforcement has become an important political issue in parts of India, particularly in states located near the Bangladesh border. Indian authorities have not immediately issued a public response to Bangladesh’s latest claims.
In response to the reported incidents, Bangladesh says it has strengthened surveillance and increased patrols along vulnerable sections of the border. Border officials have also been instructed to remain alert for any further attempts to move people across the frontier without authorization.
The dispute is expected to be discussed during a planned meeting between border security officials from both countries in New Delhi from June 8 to June 11. Observers say the talks could provide an opportunity for both sides to address concerns and prevent future incidents.
While the situation remains tense, both Bangladesh and India have historically worked together to resolve border disputes through dialogue. Officials from both countries are expected to seek a diplomatic solution as discussions continue.
