Rescue operations at the site of a South Delhi commercial building collapse have been going on for almost 20 hours, raising the death toll to six in the Saket locality of New Delhi.

The building, which was in the process of being rebuilt on its second floor near Western Marg, collapsed during the night on Saturday. This building contained coaching centres, offices and cafés. Eight people were rescued from the wreckage, but six of those people later died of their injuries, police said.

The number of deaths was confirmed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Anant Mittal who identified Ravi (24), Kapil (28), Nalin Ray (23), Alok, Parvati (35) and Ekta (24) as the dead bodies.

Parvati, who worked at a ‘tin shed’ canteen next door, was one of the dead. A large part of the waste was deposited at her business that was preferred by college students preparing for medical entrance exams, officials said.

An FIR of the incident with relevant sections was registered by police after the incident, including charges of culpable homicide. Investigation teams have been constituted to investigate the circumstances.

According to the police, some of the affected and injured people were sitting for the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). The Saket area is famous for having many coaching classes for the students going for medical and engineering courses abroad.
