About 50-armed personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) reached the police Commissionerate in Kanpur on Saturday to support other constable Vikas Singh whose mother lost her arm due to medical negligence.

The officials who had arrived in several buses and trucks, more than a dozen in all, stayed outside the Commissionerate for more than an hour, which led to the cancellation of an initially planned medical investigation and a new joint probe into the incident.

The mother’s condition worsened after her mother was given an incorrect injection in hospital, Singh said, adding that he served with the ITBP’s 32nd Battalion at Maharajpur. Her right arm was later amputated on Bithoor road on May 17 in another hospital to prevent the spread of infection.

The case was made public earlier this week when the Jawan went to various police stations to get an FIR registered. However, despite various attempts, no FIR was lodged.

Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal had, after a protest at the Commissionerate on Tuesday, directed for a medical enquiry by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). Singh and ITBP officials, however, challenged the report filed on Friday, saying it was too vague and was meant to safeguard the hospital administration.

ITBP Commandant Gaurav Prasad along with constable Singh met senior officials of the police on Saturday while others of the jawans were kept outside the premises. A number of teams also came in to visit the CMO office during the day.

When the police personnel reached the Commissionerate around 11am they deployed the armed jawans in various parts of the campus, which led to a tense atmosphere, police sources said. During their visit, some constables claimed that they had taken up security jobs and man security barricades.

But Singh said he had made an earlier appointment with the police commissioner and that his colleagues had come along to show solidarity.
