Keeping in view the recent observation by Delhi High Court regarding the Committee to Protect Journalists, the court issues contempt notices to Kejriwal, Sisodia and Sanjay Singh.

The Delhi High Court has served the contempt notices on top Aam Aadmi Party leaders Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Sanjay Singh and others for allegedly commenting on Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in the Delhi excise policy case.

The notices issued by a division bench of Justice Navin Chawla and Justice Ravinder Dudeja during the contempt proceedings against the comments and online content allegedly made by accused against the judge.

While proceedings, the bench noted that the contempt case had been based on a judgment handed down by a single judge of the court on May 14. It said that the materials used were social media posts, electronic records, reports of publications, and that copies be sent to the court prior to the case.

The contempt proceedings were brought by Justice Sharma last week after he had issued a criminal contempt action against Kejriwal, Sisodia, Sanjay Singh, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Vinay Mishra and others for their remarks and posts in an attempt to “scandalise the judiciary” and “lower the authority of the court”.

Justice Sharma, in her order, explained that the alleged campaign brought into the limelight the question of integrity and impartiality of the judiciary and its decisions and ideologies. The court also said it would have an amicus curiae to assist in this matter. The Delhi High Court also had a plea filed by the CBI challenging the discharge of Kejriwal and others in the Delhi excise policy case on its agenda.
