Dehradun, March 30, 2026: Retired Indian Army Brigadier V.K. Joshi was shot dead on Monday morning while out on his routine morning walk in the Rajpur area of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The tragic incident occurred around 7:00 AM near Johri village when the officer was caught in the crossfire of a road rage dispute between occupants of two vehicles.
According to Dehradun SP City Pramod Kumar, the Rajpur Police Station received information about a clash over an overtaking manoeuvre in Johri village. Occupants of one vehicle allegedly opened fire at the vehicle ahead. A stray bullet struck Brigadier Joshi, who had stepped out for his walk. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Police have set up blockades across all jurisdictions, including rural areas, and launched an intensive search operation to trace the vehicle and apprehend the suspects. Authorities expect swift arrests and have assured further legal proceedings.
Brigadier Joshi, a respected veteran known for his service, including contributions during the Kargil War as Commanding Officer of 13 JAK RIF, had been vocal in expressing views critical of the BJP government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and what he described as the “saffronisation” of the Indian Army. His death in broad daylight has sparked outrage and suspicion among some quarters, with sections of social media and opposition voices questioning the circumstances and pointing fingers at possible involvement of agencies.
The incident has raised concerns over law and order in the state. Police investigations are ongoing to determine if the firing was targeted or a case of stray bullet in a spontaneous clash. Condolences poured in from across the country, with tributes highlighting the veteran’s dedication to the nation.
