Legendary Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai, her family confirmed on April 12, 2026. She passed away at Breach Candy Hospital after being admitted for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection
Bhosle had a career that spanned over seventy years, recording more than 12,000 songs in different Indian languages. Her songs were part of Bollywood’s golden eras, especially during the 1970s and 1980s.
Born on September 8, 1933, to a family of musicians, Bhosle embarked on her career alongside her sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Although facing hardships in her early days, she developed an independent style of singing in different genres, ranging from classical and folk to pop music.
In 2001, she received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Moreover, she earned two nominations for Grammy Awards. Bhosle also performed with international musicians, including the British band Gorillaz.
Many people paid their tributes after her death. Notably, the current Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his grief about her passing away. Considering her outstanding contributions and unique style of singing, Bhosle’s impact will live on for many years to come.
